A police source told AFP that her death was being treated as suspicious.

"Her body was found at the bottom of the property which opens out into a wood," the spokesperson said.

The woman was found "hunched in a dug-out area, her head against the ground, covered in branches and surrounded by wood stumps", the source added.

She was dressed but no documents were found on her which did not allow for her to be identified.

A judicial source told the Daily Telegraph: "The state of the body, which was in an advanced stage of decomposition, did not enable investigators to determine the cause of death."

A post mortem is due to be carried out.

An Airbnb spokesman said: "We have offered our assistance to the police and will help them with their investigation in any way we can. We have reached out to the host and guests and will provide all necessary support."
