Giant sinkhole swallows stretch of highway in Oregon

A "monster" sinkhole that won't stop growing opened up on a stretch of highway in southern Oregon this week following heavy rains last month.

Part of Highway 101 was closed in the community of Harbor on Thursday night after the giant sinkhole swallowed the road.

Jared Castle, a Department of Transportation for southwest Oregon spokesman, told NBC News: "It's massive. There's just no other way to describe it."

It is the second sinkhole to open in the area in the past month after the first opened in a restaurant car park in December.

Both sinkholes kept growing and "probably have now met" creating one gaping hole in the highway, Castle said.

"It's a monster," he added.

Officials do not know how big the sinkhole is as it exceeds 60 feet.

Oregon Department of Transportation shared drone footage shot by YouTuber Kyle Rice on its Facebook page.

The spectacular video shows the massive hole in the road with workers and reporters surrounding it.

According to AP, there were no injuries and no vehicles were swallowed by the sinkhole.

Signs have been places along the highway re-routing traffic.
