A lorry driver is lucky to have escaped with his life after a concrete block thrown from a motorway bridge hit the cab of his truck.

Tim Woolley, 58, was travelling on the M4 under a footbridge near Sarn Services, Bridgend, on Wednesday evening when he heard the big bang.

He pulled onto the hard shoulder and noticed other cars pulling over before realising what had happened.

He's now offering a £1,000 reward to catch the culprits.

Speaking to Wales Online, Tim, from Cardigan, said: "I pulled over to the side and saw something fall off the top.

"Then another car hit something and pulled over too. We got a torch and could see a big bit of concrete on the road that had left a big dent on the roof.

"I was overtaking at the time, but if I hadn't been the concrete would probably have hit the driver's side.

"It was a big, solid block and could easily have killed someone, especially as it was thrown from about 40ft up."

After hitting Tim's lorry, the concrete block fell onto the carriageway and four more vehicles were damaged after hitting it.

Tim added: "It is a miracle no-one was injured. I keep thinking about all the awful things that could have happened like if it had hit a bus with lots of people on board, or if it had hit me in the cab and my 40 tonne lorry had careered out of control."

According to the Mirror, a spokesman for South Wales Police said the damaged caused was in the thousands, adding: "The actions of the person or persons responsible are extremely dangerous and the consequences could have resulted in the death of a motorist.

"It is very fortunate that this was not the result on this occasion."

South Wales Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw the incident or who know the identity of the culprit/s to ring 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
