A passenger was held in Indonesia after joking with a flight attendant that there was a bomb in his bag.

Endang Hendri Susandi and his two friends were on a domestic flight from Kupang to Jakarta with Batik Air on Saturday when he was arrested.

According to Jakarta Globe, security officers first discovered a bottle of insect spray, which is prohibited, when they first checked his luggage after Susandi was escorted off the plane when they became suspicious.

He was allowed to return to his seat but he then joked to a stewardess: "If I carry a bomb that wouldn't be allowed right?"

After she informed the pilot, the police were called and the three men from West Java were arrested.

No explosives were found but the incident caused a three-hour delay.

The Daily Mail reports that if charged, Susandi could spend up to 15 years in prison under Indonesian aviation law.

General Endang Sunjaya, police chief of the province of East Nusa, said: "We hope this arrest can be a lesson: mentioning the word 'bomb' on board a plane or in a public crowd can have legal consequences."

Earlier in December, a British tourist was removed from a plane in Bali after turning up for a flight with a 'toy bomb'.

Davide Fogli, a graphic designer who was born in Turin, was questioned and then cleared by airport security over the item. He told officials he had bought the item at a toy store and had intended to take it to a New Year's Eve party.

However, after boarding the Qatar Airways flight bound for Doha with a female lawyer friend, he was removed from the plane.

The plane had taxied onto the tarmac and was preparing for takeoff when it was ordered to return to the terminal.
