New map reveals 18 most dangerous countries for British tourists



The Foreign Office has revealed the 18 countries British travellers should avoid for their safety in a new map commissioned by the Independent.

The most dangerous countries on the map include Syria, Somalia and Yemen, as well as Libya, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone.

Created by Statista, the map shows 18 countries deemed unsafe for British tourists, as well as 45 countries that are partially dangerous due to unrest in certain regions.

Middle Eastern and African countries feature heavily on the map, along with Russia, a number of places in Central America and Asia.

Terrorism is the main threat to British travellers, with countries where kidnapping and terror attacks are likely listed, such as Tunisia and Egypt.

Following the 31 October plane crash in North Sinai, Egypt, the Foreign Office says: "There is a significant possibility that the crash was caused by an explosive device. As a precautionary measure, we are now advising against all but essential travel by air to or from Sharm el Sheikh."
