A British man is feared to have drowned after being dragged away by a river in the Costa del Sol.

The man is believed to be 25-years-old and was living rough in the area, according to the Mirror.

The area around the Costa del Sol and Malaga was affected by severe storms last night and it's thought that the downpour may have been the cause of the accident.

The river turned into a swollen torrent and the man was swept away from under the Tetuán bridge where he had been living.

It has not yet been confirmed that the young man drowned in the accident. Fire brigades are continuing with their search as well as Maritime Rescue and emergency helicopters.

The Mirror also reports that the rain caused heavy flooding in Nerja, Estepona and Benamargosa which came as a surprise to locals and emergency services alike given that only light rain had been forecasted.

Sadly this man isn't the only victim of the bad weather. Two British women have been reported missing off the Costa Brava after heading into the churning waters for a swim, the Daily Record reports.

The women, aged 33 and 36, were swimming in the water at Lloret del Mar but failed to reemerge so friends alerted the authorities.

A spokesman from the Salvamento Marítimo told The Local: "It was very bad weather, the waves were big and the currents were powerful," he said.

"We don't know the circumstances of why these two decided to go for a swim except that they were with a group of other women who raised the alarm when they failed to come out of the water."
