Dog owners in Cornwall are being warned to be vigilant while walking their pets on local beaches after a number of recent dog deaths.

Cornwall Council believes a white waxy substance that has been washing up on the shore is to blame for the dogs' deaths.

According to the Western Morning News, the council has put up signs at Widemouth Bay, Crooklets and Summerleaze in Bude as well.

A similar waxy substance was found on beaches in 2013 and the Cornwall Council believe they are facing the same issue this time.

The wax was described as a 'degraded, edible oil or fat' when lab tests were completed two years ago.

A miniature schnauzer fell victim to the strange white substance two years ago after having eating a lump of it that had washed up on Long Rock beach, the BBC reported.

The waxy deposits appeared in various sizes and were reported to the coastguard.

In 2013, the substance was also found at Pedn Vounder beach, Porthcurno and Porthchapel beaches.

But it's not just animals that are in danger. The BBC reports that people who come into contact with the substance should wash it off their skin and clothes if they come into contact with it.

The council's natural environment manager, Jon James, said: "Please keep you dog on a lead as there have been reports in the past that the substance could be dangerous for dogs if they eat a large amount of it.

He added: "Our contractors Cory are removing the substance from Cornwall Council owned beaches which have been affected and will be providing advice to the owners of private beaches on how to dispose of the substance."

Anyone in the area who spots deposits on the beaches should report it by calling 03001 234 141.
