A British couple's dream holiday to Las Vegas was ruined - after they realised they had booked to fly out from the wrong Glasgow.

Mary and Jack McQueen thought they'd found bargain flights costing £647 to the Sin City from Glasgow, Scotland (pictured above) in September.

However, when the e-tickets arrived, they realised they'd accidentally booked to fly from Glasgow in Montana, in the US (pictured below).

The pair booked the trip on TravelSupermarket.com in May. After clicking one of the first links they saw, they were taken to the website of travel agent Gotogate.co.uk.

Speaking in the Mirror, Mary, 64, said: "I had no idea there was a Glasgow anywhere else in the world. I got the fright of my life when I saw the e-tickets. You really couldn't make this up."

Speaking to the Daily Record, Mary added: "I double-checked everything as there were only three seats left on the aircraft. But in doing so, I must have selected Glasgow, Montana, which is listed simply as Glasgow (Mt) next to the Glasgow we know and love, on the drop down menu."

After receiving the confirmation, she said: "I was stunned. The airport in Montana is even called Glasgow International Airport. I went online and found pictures of 'downtown Glasgow', which were a far cry from Glasgow, Scotland. We had to laugh.

"We were booked on flights from Glasgow to Billings (the largest city in Montana), then to Seattle and on to Vegas."

Initially, Gotogate said they could not help, and said it was up to the airline, Hahn Air, to refund the money.

But they later refunded the couple the cost of their flights, and added: "We'll be happy to assist the customers to book new tickets on our site."

The mistake comes just days after the news that Jersey's sports minister missed an important global event in Bucharest when he flew to Budapest instead, underlining how easy it is to get a destination wrong.

"Human error" was to blame for the mistake, according to Jersey's Education, Sport and Culture department – but with several tourist hotspots sharing the exact same name or a slight variation, it's an easy mistake to make.

For example, Granada in Spain often gets confused with Grenada in the Caribbean.

There are two popular holiday destinations called Naples – one in Italy and one in Florida.

And while Boston in the US has much to delight its visitors in the 'fall', autumn in Boston in Lincolnshire has its own attractions.
