With its impressive coastline and white sandy beaches, Lefkada is that increasingly rare treat: an unspoilt holiday paradise. Its lovely beaches and crystal clear waters are its main draw for visitors, but they're certainly not the only reason for the island's beauty.

Lefkada may be named after the white mountains which dominate the landscape, but this little gem is truly verdant island, full of trees and green hills, and rich fauna and flora. The lagoon between Lefkada and the mainland is a protected wetland a shelter for many migratory birds and other rare species and in the spring the wild flowers are a spectacle to behold, with rare lilies, blue ivies and other wild flowers. In fact, this is a nature-lover's paradise. As well as the lagoons and the fields, there are the waterfalls of Dimossari gorge near Nidri and the huts of the village Voltoi. The plateau of Eglouvi is also a must-see.

If you stay in Lefkada Town in August, you will be able to join the hustle and bustle of the Folklore Festival held here every year. There are various options for accommodation, including rooms to let, studios and apartments for families, luxurious hotels and villas as well as camp sites for the more budget conscious travellers. And those of you who prefer quieter holidays, there are lovely guest houses in most of the villages and resorts around the island.

Lefkada is also one of Greece's top destinations for water sports lovers: the good weather conditions and the sheltered bays make the island a top-notch choice for sailing and yachting, while the northwest winds blowing in the early afternoon make Lefkada a windsurfer and kite-surfer's paradise!

Meanwhile, if you choose to go underrwater, you'll find sub aquatic gorges and caves protected by the Natura 2000 network. The Mediterranean reefs with the unique biodiversity offer a lifetime scuba diving experience, especially on the eastern and southern side of the island.

This film footage gives a virtual tour of the beautiful island of Lefkada in Greece which can be reached from the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge.

The small picturesque island measures just 35km north to south and 15km east to west and boasts a host of beautiful locations to be enjoyed in the area.

Among the high mountains that are found all over the Greek island you will come across a number of breathtaking waterfalls that are common thanks to the plentiful underground water reserves.

Porto Kasiki, which is also featured in the footage, is one of Lefkada's white sand and blue water beaches that can be reached by a steep stairwell which leads down from the cliff top.

Another of the island's outstanding beaches is Agiofili where the calm waters are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
