There will be free parking in the London borough of Wandsworth as parking attendants stage a two-day strike in a dispute over pay and union rights.

Members of the GMB union in Wandsworth, south west London, will walk out today and tomorrow as part of a campaign for a pay rise of £2.50 an hour to £10.

Talks with contractor Mouchel failed to break the deadlock, so around 100 workers will press ahead with industrial action. Words:PA

GMB officer Kieron Merrett said: "Wandsworth's yellow lines and restricted parking bays will be left free for all during the strike.

"Wandsworth Council must not hide behind companies like Mouchel. The council makes millions out of street parking fines and permits, so it is the council which must take responsibility and ensure its enforcement officers are paid a decent living wage."
