Fear of heights? Look away now! For a holiday like no other, a stay at a hotel perched on the edge of a cliff, above a croc-infested river or set high up in the trees might just be for you.

We've searched (very) high and low for the world's most precariously placed hotels, including a new boutique hotel in Santorini which was carved from the Greek island's volcanic caldera wall, offering jaw-dropping views of the azure waters below. And for a winter mountain break you should check out the new fibreglass tubes that are perched at a dizzying height of 4,000 metres on the southern side of Mount Elbrus in Russia.

While they may look risky from afar, once inside, these hotels offer the most breathtaking views. Take the new Alila Jabal Akhdar, which guests reach by 4x4. The resort blends in with its surroundings of a previously unexplored mountainous area in Oman and is perched 2,000 metres above sea level, overlooking a dramatic gorge and boasting awe-inspiring views of the Al Hajar Mountains.

Sitting on a 50-foot pedestal in Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio National Park, the vintage Boeing 727 fuselage-turned-hotel suite at the Costa Verde Hotel will make you feel like flying. The unique suite boasts scenic ocean and jungle views from the hard wood deck built on top the plane's former right wing.
