Confusing parking signs mean thousands of drivers across the UK are paying for wheelclampings and parking tickets when they had no idea they had done anything wrong, according to a new survey.

Twenty-two per cent of drivers who have been clamped or who have their vehicles towed away in the past two years say they were unable to understand the parking restrictions in that area, according to the poll by car insurance company Churchill. Words and photo: PA.

And 41 per cent of the 2,001 people polled said they find parking signs in their area confusing, with 33 per cent avoiding parking in their local town or city centre altogether for this very reason

In addition, the puzzling signs led to nine per cent avoiding parking in their own residential areas.

Avoiding town centres due to sign confusion is the most rife in London, where 48 per cent of motorists admitted not attempting to park in the heart of the UK capital.

The north west of England (35 per cent avoiding town centres) was the next most-shunned area, followed by the east of England (34 per cent) and south east England (32per cent).

Wales (26 per cent) and north east England (28per cent) were the areas where motorists were most happy to attempt to park in town centres.

Churchill Car Insurance head Steve Barrett said: "It's the driver's responsibility to check which parking restrictions are in operation in a particular area. However, when there are multiple restrictions in operation on a single street, it can result in motorists being confused and unintentionally parking illegally, incurring fines that could have been avoided."
