Bristol has been labelled Britain's best city to live in, according to the Sunday Times, beating Manchester, Liverpool and London to reach the top spot.

The newspaper profiled all 64 cities in the UK and Bristol took prime position thanks to its "buzzy culture", decent schools, low unemployment rates and "beautiful housing stock". The city's "fantastic" countryside and nightlife were also praised.

London was named Britain's best-connected city, and Cambridge was labelled the brainiest. And the city with the best views is Edinburgh.

The award won't come as any surprise to Bristolians. Last October, the city came top of the Quality of Living Index because it has experienced the highest growth in disposable income and the lowest unemployment rates in the country.

And in 2008, it was named Britain's most environmentally sustainable city, and in 2009 it was the only British destination to feature in Dorling Kindersely's Eyewitness guide to the top ten cities in the world to visit, reports the Daily Telegraph,.

While Bristol is the best city to live in, the nation's happiest city is Sheffield, and Belfast is the most optimistic, says the survey.

Sunday Times home editor Helen Davies said: "Cities can be fabulous places to live. They offer almost everything you could ever want. Many of us already live in a city and even more of us are predicted to make our home in one in the next decade.

"The urban lifestyle appeals to almost everyone: from those in their twenties starting out, families putting down roots and retirees moving back into the bustle of a city centre. Overall, the list is a celebration of city life."
