Mandela star Idris Elba was rushed to hospital after suffering an asthma attack on a South Africa-bound plane to attend a press conference for his new film.

"Idris is in hospital after an asthma attack on the plane last night," movie producer Anant Singh told reporters.

Sky News reports that the actor, who plays South Africa's former president in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, was taken ill before the aircraft left the UK.

The 41-year-old missed the news conference in Johannesburg but is expected to appear at the film's premiere on Sunday.

According to Entertainmentwise, Elba spoke of his dedication to the role at the Toronto International Film Festival in October and said: "I moved to South Africa for about three months prior to shooting, just so that I could understand what South Africa was like ... and to understand the tribes, especially Mr Mandela's."
