Bali offers the best value for long-haul tourists, a new survey has revealed.

South Africa, which has been known as an expensive holiday spot in the past has also become more affordable, according to research by the Post Office.

Sri Lanka was top of the best-value list for three years, but has dropped to fifth place after a 45 per cent rise in resort costs.

The Post Office found that 10 tourist items (including a glass of wine, three-course evening meal, bottle of mineral water and sun cream) in Colombo cost a total of £54.45, while the items in Bali cost just £43.91.

While the pound remains weak against the euro, sterling has strengthened against many long-haul currencies.

Hoi An, Vietnam; Phuket, Thailand and Cancun, Mexico were also named for their good value.

Of the USA resorts, Orlando (£66.24) is where your travel money will stretch the furthest, while you'll to change more if you're heading to Miami (£96.84).

The survey revealed that Australasia has the most expensive destinations. The tourist items cost £121.35 in New Zealand (Auckland) and £124.69 in Australia (Darwin), although the Australian dollar's fall against sterling means prices are 10 per cent lower than last year.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: "After a summer when sterling bought less holiday cash for trips to Europe, winter sun tourists can look forward to seeing their pounds stretch further in many of the most popular long haul destinations.

"However, we advise them to consider the whole picture and not just the package price before booking. Look for a destination where the pound is worth more and where resort costs are low."
