Updated

National Geographic is celebrating 125 years of photography with a beautiful special edition showcasing some of its best images from over the years.

Our picture gallery below shows just some of the images from the October 125th anniversary issue of National Geographic magazine, which features iconic shots from history, including Steve McCurry's 'The Afghan Girl'. The piercing eyes of the girl that graced the cover of National Geographic in 1985 became known as the 'Afghan Mona Lisa'. Read more about it here

To celebrate the magazine's anniversary, National Geographic is inviting photo enthusiasts to submit photos and participate in an inaugural digital assignment for the magazine, part of an online photosharing community, Your Shot. The assignment is based loosely around the theme of the October 2013 anniversary issue: the power of photography.
