Whether you're a baking amateur or a seasoned pro in the kitchen, these three UK "bakeaways" are perfect for anyone hoping to release their inner Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood.




Harmony House Cookery School

Perfect for: Small groups and families


Transport yourself to the pretty village of Stillingfleet in North Yorkshire and book a place on a Simply Cook baking workshop at the Harmony House Cookery School.

Here you'll pick up the art of the Swiss roll, learn how to make the perfect Victoria sponge, and test your skills at making brandy snaps as well as the secret to making scones and muffins. There are also workshops for kids, including the family fun bread making class for 9-14-year-olds.

Little Trewern Farm

Perfect for: One-to-one baking classes


This picturesque stone farmhouse, hidden on the banks of the river Monnow in the Black Mountains of Brecon Beacons, is an idyllic spot for an intimate baking class with a distinctly continental flavour.

Les patrons of Little Trewern Farm, Rhiannon and Simon, offer their guests a Taste of France with lessons in the art of French Patisserie - eclairs, tarte tatin and macaroons - and Viennoiserie - buttery brioche, croissants and fougasse.

There's only one room on offer at this little guest house and those wanting to partake of the baking classes need to book a minimum of two nights' at the B&B. Prices start from £85 per night and the course costs £95 for one person or £110 for two, which includes all ingredients and a lunch during the class.


Bread Matters

Perfect for: Serious bakers


Immerse yourself in all things dough under the expert eye of master bread maker Andrew Whitely at a school for serious bakers. Take an in-depth courses on everything flour related, from professional baking to sourdoughs and flavoured breads.

Housed in Macbiehill, 17 miles South of Edinburgh in the Pentland Hills in a converted farm on an organic smallholding, a two-day intermediate course costs £395 and includes everything you bake over the two days, a signed copy of Bread Matters by Andrew Whitley, food and refreshments and a three-course dinner on the first evening of the course.

For overnight and multi-day courses, Bread Matters offers free transport to and from a range of nearby guest houses and bed and breakfasts like Rutherford House - a country property with mature gardens. Prices start from £40 per person per night, and discounts are offered for Bread Matters guests staying two or more nights.
