London Southend Airport has been named the best airport in the UK in a Which? survey.

In the poll of more than 11,500 passengers, London Southend received an impressive score of 84 per cent, followed by Humberside with 81 per cent and Robin Hood - Doncaster Sheffield with 78 per cent.

Customers praised the speedy check-ins and arrivals at London Southend.

The worst airport in Britain was revealed as London Luton, which achieved a traveller score of 43 per cent.

Which? readers described Luton Airport as "dark and gloomy" and "poorly designed and poorly signed inside and out".

Heathrow (45 per cent) and Gatwick (46 per cent) were also at the bottom of the league.

In the poll, smaller airports outperformed the bigger hubs.

Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: "Our research shows a jumbo jet-sized gap in the performance of UK airports with smaller terminals generally performing better.

"It is clear some of our major airports have some work to do if they are to keep more of their passengers satisfied."
