A British man is critically ill in hospital after a huge fire ripped through his holiday home in Benidorm, Spain, reports Europa Press.

The unnamed 34-year-old man and his son were lucky to escape with their lives after the blaze caused devastation in their second-floor flat in the popular tourist destination.

According to the report in the Daily Mail, he is being treated at Alicante General Hospital for first and second degree burns, while his son suffered minor injuries.

Around 30 people were forced to evacuate the building, located in Calle Armada Espanola, and firefighters took more than an hour to get the flames under control.

An investigation has now been launched into the cause of the blaze.

Last week, an 83-year-old expatriate died in a fire at his home in Benidorm.
