Sticky situation! Traffic chaos as lorry spills 19-ton load of glue

Motorists found themselves 'stuck' in traffic on Friday morning after a lorry spilled its 19-ton load of glue all over the road in Scotland.

The driver reportedly came within feet of careering into a petrol station when the lorry jack-knifed at 5.30am.

But the HGV's container burst open when it hit a wall, and spilled glue across the A76 at Sanquhar in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland.

A Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary spokesman told the BBC: "The glue container on the lorry has burst and glue spilling is affecting the road surface.

"Road diversions are being put in place, however motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible."

Anne Williamson, 57, who runs the Burnside filling station and tea room, which the lorry driver somehow managed to avoid, said the driver had come within feet of causing a 'disaster'.

She told the Daily Mail: "It's a bit messy. They are trying to recover the lorry but there are thousands of litres of liquid glue near the main road and on the forecourt.

"At one point there were 20 people out there trying to sort the mess out. We think the lorry might have hit an island in the middle of the road and the driver lost control."

She added: "He managed to avoid the petrol station and he hit a wall. He was really close to hitting the petrol station, he's missed the sign by about a 3ft and the pumps by 10ft.

"It doesn't bear thinking about what would have happened if he had hit the pumps. It would have been a disaster."
