Britain set for a snow-covered weekend

The extreme wintry weather across Britain shows no sign of abating as many parts of the country face more snow and ice.

Saturday is set to see snow, particularly in the north, central and east of England, with widespread transport chaos predicted.

Met Office spokeswoman Sarah Holland told Aol Travel: "The main risk of snow remains for the north and east. Amounts we are looking at is 10cm possible at lower levels, more over higher ground. It will also be cold through the weekend, day time temperatures around mid-single figures. Sunday night temperatures down to -2°C.

"South of this we are looking at 20-25mm of rain – so there is quite a bit of rain around as well."

She added that the snow risk is nationwide, and more will follow on Sunday and Monday.

The Met Office has a yellow warning in place for ice on Friday morning across parts of the West Midlands and southwest England.

Its website read: "There is also a risk of ice on untreated surfaces in other parts of England. There is a risk of hill snow through Friday, with snow possibly down to low levels in East Anglia. There is a further risk of ice on roads Friday night. Thereafter there is a risk of snow on Saturday, especially over higher ground, but also locally to lower levels in central and east England.

"The Met Office has a yellow warning in place for snow on Sunday lasting into Monday for most parts of England. From Sunday onwards, the chance of the cold temperature threshold being met increases to 70% across most parts of England."
