A Qantas passenger inadvertently caused an in-flight scare because his T-shirt, bearing a slogan from the 1987 family film The Princess Bride, made other passengers feel threatened.

The Telegraph reports that Wynand Mullins boarded a flight to Aukland on Sunday, with 'My name in Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die', printed on his top.

Although some of his fellow passengers recognised the movie reference, others told cabin crew that they felt threatened - and Mr Mullins was asked if he was able to remove it. As he didn't have a change of clothes, he continued to wear the T-shirt for the remainder of the flight.

Mr Mullins told Fairfax New Zealand: "The flight attendant said to me: 'Are you able to remove it because some of the passengers are quite intimidated by it.' I thought it was all a bit silly. The person next to me was laughing, because they knew the movie. The whole experience was a bit over the top, but also a bit comical."

A Qantas spokesman said that the issue had been settled onboard the flight and explained: "Qantas does have dress standards for passengers travelling on our aircraft... particularly for slogans which other passengers may find offensive or threatening."

The Princess Bride is a PG-rated fairytale adventure, starring an evil prince, a beautiful princess and a pirate. It achieved cult status in the years following its release and has been named one of the 50 greatest comedy films of all time by Total Film and Channel 4.
