Britain is on flood alert

The Environment agency has issued 70 flood warnings and 309 flood alerts across England and Wales, due to the rapid thaw of snow and ice and torrential rain across the UK.

The Daily Mail reports that rivers are at bursting point and flash flooding is likely, especially in areas where there is still a significant amount of snow and ice.

Wales has already been badly affected, with parts of Carmarthenshire, Powys, Gwynedd and Norfolk being hit by floods.

BBC News reports that there are also flood warnings in place in East Anglia, south-west England, the Midlands, north-east England and north-west England.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued seven flood warnings for the Scottish Borders, Whitesands in Dumfries and Galloway and parts of central Scotland.

Environment Agency spokesman Innes Thomson told BBC News: "The message is that there's wet weather all over the country, we've already got flooded fields, we've got localised flooding, we've got high ground water and we've got spring tides this week coming. So we've actually got a complete cocktail of issues and concerns for us to keep an eye on."

Weather Channel forecaster Leon Brown told AOL Travel that we're in for a windy few days. He said: "Next weeks looks quite stormy with some very deep low pressure centres moving eastwards. We can expect widespread gales on Monday afternoon and evening, and again the risk of gales of severe gales across the north on Tuesday night to early Wednesday with gusts as high as 80mph over the Pennines and higher parts of southern Scotland."
