A man was killed when he was hit by a train near a level crossing in Portsmouth last night.

Portsmouth News reported how the man died after he was struck by a Southern Bognor to Portsmouth service train close to the Whyke Road level crossing Chichester at around 9.35pm.

Paramedics and police were called to the scene but the man was pronounced dead shortly after 10pm.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance, who sent two ambulances and a rapid response car, told Portsmouth News: 'We were called to a level crossing to reports of a person being struck by a train.'

A British Transport Police spokesman confirmed the train driver had been interviewed and said: 'It's a non-suspicious fatality.'

Police have not yet identified the man.

There were delays of up to an hour affecting travel between Barnham and Havant last night as police closed the line to investigate.
