Naked man lives on desert island for 20 years

Updated

A 79-year-old man has been living on a deserted island for 20 years in a remote part of Japan.

Masafumi Nagasaki chose to escape the rat race and live on Outer Distant Island (Sotobanari) to live out his old age. Scroll down to see the video.

This may sound idyllic to some - but the island is far from hospitable to human life. There is no natural water, and the area is prone to powerful typhoons and biting insects.

Dangerous currents surrounding the entire island also mean that fishing is impossible.

He no longer wears clothes unless he is taking his weekly trip to a nearby island to collect water and rice cakes, which he pays for with money sent by his family.

In a news interview with Reuters, Nagasaki said: "It hadn't really occurred to me before now how important it is to choose the place of your death... But to die here, surrounded by nature, you just can't beat it, can you?"

He's not the only one who has an island all to himself. Many of the rich and famous seek out the solitary life on a deserted island - albeit the five-star variety...
