200 passengers left without luggage in Barbados as door jams shut

Almost 200 passengers were left without luggage after the rear hold door of a flight from London to Barbados wouldn't open.

The travellers stepped off the eight-hour Virgin flight from Gatwick, and headed to the baggage reclaim to collect their luggage.

But crew at Grantley Adams Airport were left with the unenviable job of telling almost 200 people that their luggage was stuck in the rear hold of the plane, and would be sent the 4,200 miles back to London for experts to wedge the door open.

There were 288 passengers on the flight, 88 of whom received their luggage, which had been stored in the front hold.

The passengers landed in Barbados at 10.30am on Sunday, and received their suitcases at 6.15pm on Monday, by which time their luggage had travelled 13,000 miles.

A Virgin spokesman told the Daily Mail: "We would like to apologise to all customers affected.

"Every effort was made to open the luggage door manually in Barbados following a technical issue but the aircraft was returned to London. Support is being provided to people in Barbados."
