It takes some bottle to snap up a 200-year-old white wine for £75,000 - but that's exactly what famed sommelier Christian Vanneque did, making it the most expensive ever sold.

The 1811 vintage Château d'Yquem set a world record price for a white not sold at auction, and Christian now plans to display it at his new restaurant in Bali, Indonesia.

It's hailed as one of the greatest vintages to come out of France's famous Bordeaux wine region and is known as one of the Comet Vintages after the Flaugergues Comet shot past the Earth the year it was made.

And whoever finally gets to drink it (Christian, we'd hope) won't be disappointed - unlike most wines, d'Yquem gets better with age and is never passed its best thanks to the preservative properties of its natural sugar and acidity.

The sale by the Antique Wine Company at London's Ritz comes after the record for the most expensive bottle of any wine sold at auction was set last November.

The a bottle of red 1947 French Cheval-Blanc went for £192,000 at Christie's in Geneva.

We'd definitely need a drink after spending that much on one bottle of wine...
