Facebook news feeds are full of scams that your friends have fallen for and shared. The problem is that some great giveaways and competitions are real, so how do you spot a scam?
A good mantra is: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Bill Gates is not going to donate £25 for every share of a message posted online. Ray-ban sunglasses will never cost £15. If you're tempted by an offer like this, go to the company or person's official Facebook page and search for it there.
You might think that there's no harm in trying your luck. At best, you're simply proliferating the scam by sharing it with your friends. At worst, you're opening yourself up to the scammers by clicking on the link to the competition, giveaway, free download or whatever it may be. Once you've clicked, malicious software (malware) can be downloaded onto your device. Malware can do everything from locking your computer and holding its contents to ransom, to spying on everything you do online, including stealing your usernames and passwords.
If you click that link in a mobile app, it can sign you up for expensive premium rate services which you won't discover until you get a huge bill. And some scammers will take over your Facebook profile to start spamming your friends – we've all had messages like that.
The good news is that TalkTalk has already thought about keeping you safe on social media through SuperSafe powered by F-Secure.
