NBA champions Cavaliers sign Deron Williams

Updated:

The Cleveland Cavaliers have announced the signing of veteran point guard Deron Williams.

NBA champions the Cavaliers welcomed Williams, 32, to Cleveland ahead of Monday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

A 12-year veteran and three-time All-Star, Williams was waived by the Dallas Mavericks on February 23 and was almost immediately linked to the Cavs, along with centre Andrew Bogut.

Williams was the third overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft and spent his first six seasons with the Utah Jazz. He spent four-plus seasons with the Brooklyn Nets before joining the Mavericks in 2015.

He averaged 13.1 points, 6.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 29.3 minutes through 40 games (all starts) with the Mavericks this season.

Williams, who has a career average of 16.6 points, 8.2 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.1 steals, will help spread the ball to scorers LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. He had 10 or more assists in five games this season.

Head coach Tyronn Lue said he hopes Williams can make his Cleveland debut against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday.
