Daniel Ricciardo believes Red Bull were right to utilise super-soft tyres in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as they seek to deny Mercedes yet another 1-2 in the final race of the season.
Ricciardo was the best of the rest on Saturday, qualifying third behind the title-chasing pair of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
World championship leader Rosberg knows a podium finish will guarantee him a first world crown, regardless of Hamilton's position, but Ricciardo is hopeful he and Max Verstappen can challenge the Mercedes pair.
As a result of their tyre choice in Q2, Red Bull's drivers are likely to be capable of longer first stints on Sunday.
"We've got to try something [in terms of tyre strategy]," said Ricciardo. "It seems to be a bit of a trend this year, if we're in a position to qualify on a different tyre we'll try and see if it gives us an opportunity.
"I was pretty slow starting the qualifying session but Q3, when it matters, I put in some good times.
"Third was the target, hopefully we can be somewhere up here [on the podium] tomorrow."
