Astros acquire catcher McCann from Yankees

Updated:

The Houston Astros added some much-needed veteran leadership on Thursday, acquiring seven-time All Star Brian McCann in a trade with the New York Yankees.

Houston were expected to bid to retain the services of free agent catcher Jason Castro, who hit only .210 last season.

McCann, 32, brings a veteran presence for a young team, as well as more offensive pop. He hit 20 home runs last season.

He became expendable following the emergence of slugging sensation Gary Sanchez.

In exchange, the Yankees received Astros prospects Albert Abreu and Jorge Guzman.

Abreu, 21, rated by MLB.com as the Astros' number seven prospect, is a right-handed pitcher.
