Bennett refuses to hit back at Australia jibes

Updated:

Wayne Bennett resisted the temptation to hit back at Mal Meninga and further jibes from the Australia camp ahead of England's Four Nations opener against New Zealand on Saturday.

Australia head coach Meninga took a pop at England head coach Bennett when the Kangaroos touched down for the Four Nations by stating that the Brisbane Broncos boss wants his job.

Meninga hit out at Bennett once again on Saturday, stating that the 66-year-old was attempting to undermine his authority and position with the Australian Rugby League.

Sam Thaiday, who plays under Bennett for the Broncos, weighed in by having a dig at his club coach after Australia's rout of Scotland on Friday and Cooper Cronk suggested he only took the England job after missing out on another spell in charge of his country.

Bennett refused to take the bait when asked about the comments before England's encounter with the defending champions in Huddersfield.

"I've heard nothing until you've just told me then, so I don't know anything about it." he said.

Quizzed if he though the Australians were concerned about him being in charge of England, Bennett replied: "I've got no idea, I've just got to get through this game today and then I'll worry about Australia somewhere down the track."

England and Australia lock horns at London Stadium on November 13.
