Cal Crutchlow revealed he had flashbacks to his Australian MotoGP crash two years ago after seeing Marc Marquez suffer the same fate to enable the Brit to claim victory.
Honda rider Crutchlow claimed only his second win in the premier class on Sunday, with Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales second and third respectively.
Championship leader Marquez was in front until he came off with 18 laps remaining to give Crutchlow the opportunity to top the podium.
Crutchlow suffered the agony of a final-lap fall at the same section of the track in 2014 and that was at the forefront of his mind after Marquez found himself in the gravel.
"If Marc crashed at Turn 6, I wouldn't have thought anything of it," Crutchlow said.
"I crashed [at Turn 4] two years ago, and he crashed on lap nine or something, so I spent the rest of the race thinking, 'this is a disaster!'
"I honestly really didn't brake so much into there, I didn't gain any time there, I just took it quite easy.
"I had some flashbacks from a couple of years ago, there's no doubt about that.
"I was pleased to be able to take advantage when I needed to take advantage."
