Reigning champions Adelaide United had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Newcastle Jets in their A-League opener at the McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.
The Jets came close to opening the scoring in somewhat fortunate manner when Aleksandr Kokko blocked an attempted clearance from goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic onto the crossbar after 15 minutes.
The hosts did grab the lead two minutes later, though, when Wayne Brown found the net with a superb long-range strike to open the scoring.
However, Adelaide were behind for just 12 minutes as Jesse Makarounas made the most of a mix-up between Daniel Mullen and goalkeeper Jack Duncan, coolly striking home from the edge of the area.
Duncan made up for his earlier mistake halfway through the second half, doing well to keep out Ben Garuccio's free-kick from distance to keep his side level.
Newcastle could have restored their lead with 15 minutes left, only for Nicholas Cowburn's header from a difficult angle to go inches wide as it ended all square.
Jets manager Mark Jones, who took charge last month, will have been pleased with his side's display against last season's champions, but there was bad news as well as he lost Kokko, Jason Hoffman and Daniel Mullen to injury, with the trio doubtful for next week's match against Brisbane Roar.
