Australia set a new Twenty20 international record on Tuesday as they posted a score of 263-3 in their opening clash with Sri Lanka.
The total surpasses the previous record of 260 set by Sri Lanka in 2007, and levels the overall T20 marker held by Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Glenn Maxwell was the star of the innings in Pallekele, producing an unbeaten 145 to fall just 11 runs short of Aaron Finch's individual T20I record.
Maxwell, who was left out of the of the recent one-day international series against the same opponents, answered his doubters by living up to his 'Big Show' nickname - a moniker he has been keen to shed.
The 27-year-old struck 14 fours and nine maximums in a barnstorming display, firing three sixes in a row in a stunning 17th over.
Maxwell, who was dropped by Tillakaratne Dilshan as he brought up his maiden T20I century, was ably assisted by Travis Head (45) - the pair combined for a 109-run partnership that saw the tourists make history.
