Larson claims first career win in Michigan

In his 99th career start, Kyle Larson is finally in victory lane in the Sprint Cup Series after winning the Pure Michigan 400 on Sunday.

Chase Elliott beat Larson off pit road by half a car length during the final green-flag pit stops of the race as it appeared the former was going to take his first career chequered flag, but Michael Annett brought out the caution with 12 laps remaining.

Like at Michigan earlier this season, Elliott had a tough time getting his car going in the final restart as Larson took the lead with nine laps remaining and held on for his first career win.

With the victory, Larson claimed his ticket to the Chase, taking a valuable spot away from drivers on the top-16 bubble, including Elliott, who finished second.

Elliott sits 14th on the Chase Grid followed by Austin Dillon and Jamie McMurray. If the season ended today, Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne would be left out of NASCAR's version of the play-offs.

Filling in for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr. (concussion) for a second time this season, Alex Bowman ran into mechanical issues midway through the race.

The number 88 car suffered from an ignition problem and had to go to garage and reboot the system before heading back to the track four laps down. Bowman finished 30th.

NASCAR rolled out its updated lower downforce rules package it used at Michigan earlier this year and at Kentucky for Sunday's Pure Michigan 400.

The set-up features a host of changes to further reduce downforce and sideforce, including: the spoiler shortened from 3.5 inches to 2.5 inches, splitter reduced to two inches and resize of deck fin to match spoiler.
