Rio 2016: Brazil win beach volleyball gold

Brazil claimed their first beach volleyball gold in 12 years as Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt won the men's final at an electric Copacabana.

The duo got past Italians Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo 21-19 21-17 in the gold medal match, sparking wild celebrations.

Cerutti and Schmidt became the first Brazilians since Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos in 2004 to win beach volleyball gold for their nation.

Spurred on by their home fans, the hosts were desperate - with 15 dig successes to Italy's five having a huge impact in the Rio rain.

It added to what has been a good tournament for Brazil, with Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas winning silver in the women's.

Dutch duo Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen earlier took out bronze in the men's, beating Russia's Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Konstantin Semenov 23-21 22-20.
