Rio 2016: President Obama and Tonga make a splash

The unlikely duo of United States president Barack Obama and Tonga's flag bearer took centre stage during the Rio 2016 opening ceremony.

President Obama sent his well wishes to Team USA, while Pita Taufatofua stole the show during the parade of nations.

They were among several social media highlights.

Model Gisele Bundchen kicked the opening ceremony off in some style, walking the length of the Maracana to 'Girl from Ipanema'. Andy Murray was given the honour of leading out Great Britain and the world number two appeared to enjoy the occasion. Australia were among those whose uniforms were questioned... But there were no such question marks over Tonga and Taufatofua, whose oily entrance created waves. That all came after the highlights of the start, as Rio was lit up in a colourful and entertaining opening.
