Half of Wales tuned in to watch the Euro 2016 win over Belgium

Wales' barnstorming 3-1 victory over Belgium has become the nation's most watched live sports game to date.

A record 1.27 million, almost half the population of Wales, tuned in to watch the quarter-final tie on Friday night.

The audience figures surpassed previous live games such as Wales' 2003 play-off against Russia and the ill-fated World Cup qualifier versus Romania in 1993.

BBC Cymru Wales director Rhodri Talfan Davies confirmed the news via his Twitter account.

That record is likely to last for just a couple of days, with Wales' semi-final against Portugal on Wednesday looking set to beat the mark.
