British middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr is close to securing a fight with Kazakhstan's Gennady Golovkin - the WBC, WBA and IBF world middleweight champion.
"It's funny, I am still waiting for a call from the Eubanks to say this was all for a bit of hype. But it's not - they genuinely want Chris Eubank to fight the most feared boxer on the planet in Gennady Golovkin. They are deadly serious about the fight," promoter Eddie Hearn told Sports Mail.
Eubank's record stands at 23 wins (18 knockouts) and one loss, while Golovkin is undefeated from 35 fights, winning 32 of those by knockout. He's widely considered boxing's most lethal puncher.
Hearn says after 11 days of negotiations things are looking positive for a September fight at the O2, with Eubank expected to earn at least £3 million.
"It is very close to being made. We had a positive meeting with Sky and the major details are nearly all agreed. We still have stuff to discuss but I expect both sides to sign by the end of this weekend," said Hearn.
If the fight does go ahead, as it looks like it will, Eubank will be a huge underdog. It will be the fight of the year. And it will get fiery.
