Prized NHL free agent Steve Stamkos is off the market, as the star centre has decided to re-sign with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Four-time All-Star Stamkos confirmed his new eight-year contract via his official Twitter account on Wednesday.
Excited to be back for 8 more years @TBLightning ! Here we go .....-- Steven Stamkos (@RealStamkos91) June 29, 2016
The 26-year-old is reportedly set to earn $68million - an average annual value of $8.5m.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were pulling out all the stops to land Stamkos, reportedly bringing in a couple of heavy hitters to help their recruiting efforts. A meeting between Stamkos and Maple Leafs brass went down earlier this week in Toronto, and a few other people of influence were there, too - Mayor John Tory and Canadian Tire CEO Michael Medline.
The Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks were also believed to be contenders to sign Stamkos.
