Scherzer, Nationals outclass Cubs

Max Scherzer retired the first 16 batters he faced as he led the Washington Nationals past the Chicago Cubs in MLB, while Adam Eaton starred.

Scherzer struck out 11 and gave up just two hits in seven innings as the Nationals claimed a 4-1 win over the Cubs on Monday.

Adam Eaton starred as the Chicago White Sox needed 12 innings to overcome the Detroit Tigers 10-9.

Zack Greinke pitched seven strong innings to help the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.

The Cincinnati Reds battled to a 9-8 win over the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies shut out the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0.

Khris Davis had five RBIs as the Oakland Athletics thrashed the Texas Rangers 14-5, the Miami Marlins crushed the San Diego Padres 13-4 and the Milwaukee Brewers lost out to the San Francisco Giants 11-5.

The Kansas City Royals edged the Cleveland Indians 2-1 and the Minnesota Twins claimed a 9-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

White Sox outfielder Eaton went four-for-five with two runs scored, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base against the Tigers. Eaton drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Corey Seager has morphed into a bona fide MLB star.

After giving up seven runs (six earned) against the Tigers on Monday, James Shields became the first pitcher to allow seven-plus runs in each of his first two starts as a White Sox pitcher since Hugo "Dutch" Klaerner in 1934.

The Cubs will try to get back on track by sending the ageless John Lackey (7-2, 2.63 ERA) to face off against Gio Gonzalez (3-5, 3.93 ERA), who has struggled in three of his last four starts.

With the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox tied for the American League East lead, this series may produce a play-off atmosphere. Chris Tillman (8-1, 3-01 ERA) will try to keep his stellar season going against David Price (7-3, 4.63 ERA).
