Huddersfield Giants academy player remains critical

Huddersfield Giants have confirmed academy player Ronan Costello remains in a critical condition in hospital after sustaining a serious injury during a match on Saturday.

A club statement from the Giants on Saturday announced the abandonment of an academy fixture with Salford Red Devils, following Costello's injury.

The Super League club provided an update on Sunday, which read: "Huddersfield Giants academy player Ronan Costello remains in a critical condition in Leeds General Infirmary.

"The club respectfully asks that all supporters respect the wish for privacy and sensitivity for the family at such a difficult time."

England international Brett Ferres, who moved from Huddersfield to Leeds Rhinos ahead of the 2016 season, tweeted: "Keep fighting Ronan Costello, just shows the dangers of our great sport. RL family will b [sic] right behind you."
