Kentucky coach: 76ers shouldn't take Simmons with number one pick

Forget the hype surrounding top NBA Draft prospect Ben Simmons, Kentucky coach John Calipari has called on the Philadelphia 76ers to take Jamal Murray with the number one pick.

LSU star Simmons' name is expected to be called out first at the NBA Draft in Brooklyn on June 23, with the 76ers holding the top pick for the first time in 20 years.

But Calipari, who coached Murray in Kentucky, believes the 19-year-old projected top-three pick is the safe selection for the 76ers, ahead of Simmons and Duke's Brandon Ingram.

"If you're going to take the number one pick, you probably should do it from our program,'' Calipari told ESPNU's College Basketball podcast.

"He [Murray] can stretch the defence, play off the ball and the NBA is going position less. He can flat-out shoot the ball and is physically ready.''

Calipari added: "What does Philadelphia need more than anything else? Someone to make shots and guard play.

"I am biased. I want my guy. But he can play multiple positions, he can physically step in and play right away. He can play the point. He can score in bunches.

"You watch Golden State. Who really is their point guard? Whoever has it.''

Murray averaged 20 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists for Kentucky in 2015-16.
