Alonso to honour Salom in Canada

Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso will honour the late Luis Salom in Canada with a special helmet following the Moto2 rider's tragic death in Barcelona last Friday.

Salom, 24, died in hospital after crashing into the barriers in free practice for the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The SAG Racing rider lost grip heading into turn 12 after braking later than normal, leading to the high-speed crash.

Alonso revealed he will wear a special tribute to his fellow Spaniard for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

He wrote on Instagram: "You will always be in the heart of many people. I respect you. I admire you. Eternal."

Siempre estarás en el corazón de mucha gente. Te respeto. Admiro. Eterno #luisSalom

Alonso drove to his best result of the season last time out in Monaco, finishing in fifth place ahead of Force India's Nico Hulkenberg.

The 34-year-old McLaren driver has won just once in Canada (2006) since making his F1 debut in 2001.
