Roger Goodell was in good spirits after NFL's Twitter account was hacked on Tuesday, leading to a false announcement of his death.
The NFL commissioner responded with humour to the hacked tweet, saying: "Man, you leave the office for 1 day of golf w/ Jim Kelly & your own network kills you off."
The tweet Goodell alluded to came from the verified NFL account earlier in the day.
It said: "We regret to inform our fans that our commissioner, Roger Goodell, has passed away. He was 57. #RIP"
The tweet was retweeted thousands of times in a matter of minutes and quickly deleted, but the hackers tweeted from the NFL account twice more before going silent.
"We have engaged law enforcement to look into the matter," the NFL said in a statement on Tuesday. "We are reviewing and strengthening our cyber-security measures."
