There was a lot of sympathy for Louis van Gaal once his sacking was finally confirmed

Everyone knew it was coming and just after 8.30pm on Monday it was finally confirmed that Louis van Gaal had been sacked as Manchester United boss.

His exit comes just two days after winning the FA Cup final and amid a tide of reports that Jose Mourinho had already been lined up to take over.

Van Gaal might not have completely endeared himself during his two-year stay at Old Trafford - United did become a bit dull - but given the circumstances of his exit plenty of people had sympathy for the Dutchman on Twitter.

Van Gaal's goodbye message also drew praise as he thanked everyone for the chance to manage in England - and fulfil a life-long ambition - while he also describe United fans as the best in the world.

After the news thoughts quickly turned to who his replacement is going to be.

There's no prizes for guessing who is expected to be announced.

With Pep Guardiola taking over the blue half of Manchester next season and Mourinho set to settle in on the other side of town, fans are already drooling over the prospect of two of the world's greatest managers going head to head.
