Team Sky rider Peter Kennaugh could miss the Tour de France after suffering a suspected broken collarbone in a heavy crash during the Tour of California.
The 26-year-old British road race champion was involved in a smash during the closing stages of stage three on Tuesday and was taken to hospital.
Kennaugh's participation in the most prestigious Grand Tour, which starts in Mont-Saint-Michel on July 2, is now in doubt.
Team Sky sport director Gabriel Rasch said: "We were looking all good until Pete crashed. When he crashed the guys waited for him and pretty quickly we saw he couldn't carry on.
"But by then it was almost too late so the guys just went in the grupetto from there. The crash came at the worst possible time, just before the final climb."
