Blues hold off Sharks to take game one

The St Louis Blues withstood some intense late pressure from the San Jose Sharks to seal a 2-1 victory in game one of the NHL Western Conference finals on Sunday.

The Sharks hit the post twice in the closing stages of the third period as the Blues held on for the win on home ice in St Louis.

There was a rocking atmosphere inside the Scottrade Center in a game that came to life 15 minutes into the first period.

David Backes gave the Blues the lead, taking advantage of the power play, but San Jose managed to respond just 34 seconds later through Joe Pavelski.

However, Jori Lehtera restored the Blues' advantage midway through the second period, smashing into the net what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The second game in the best-of-seven series takes place on Tuesday at the same venue as the two sides vie for a spot in the Stanley Cup final.
