Prasad injury compounds Sri Lanka misery

Dhammika Prasad provided an injury concern for Sri Lanka as Graham Ford's tourists endured a miserable day against Essex at Chelmsford.

Having been dismissed for just 254 by a largely inexperienced attack on day one of their opening three-day fixture, Sri Lanka saw their county opponents rack up a total of 412-4 declared on Monday.

Jaik Mickleburgh and the in-form Tom Westley hit 109 and 108 respectively for Essex, while former England all-rounder Ravi Bopara added 87 not out.

If Essex's smooth progress with the bat was not painful enough for Sri Lanka, seamer Prasad limped off the field midway through his 18th over.

Teenage first-class debutant Aaron Beard then added to his four-wicket first-innings haul with the dismissal of Kaushal Silva (7) and Kusal Mendis also departed for 16 as Sri Lanka reached stumps on 42-2, still 116 runs in arrears.

While Sri Lanka struggled, two members of England's middle order enjoyed a day to remember at Headingley.

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow shared 372 in 67 overs for Yorkshire's fourth wicket in a County Championship fixture against Surrey. Root was unbeaten on 190 from 221 deliveries at stumps, while Bairstow - who hit 246 against Hampshire last month - contributed 198 from 231 balls.
